Seller verification at Sedo: What you need to know

Active Sedo sellers will soon receive an email asking them to verify their account. Here's what's behind it, what to expect and why this is a good thing.

Anyone selling domains through Sedo will soon receive an email from us asking them to verify their seller account once. In this article, we explain what's behind it, what to expect, and why this is a good thing.

Who does the verification affect?

The verification applies exclusively to customers who actively sell domains through Sedo or have domains listed for sale. If you use Sedo only to buy domains, you don't need to do anything for now.

Why are we introducing the verification?

EU legislation on combating money laundering and financial crime requires platforms like Sedo to confirm the identity of their sellers. This applies to all marketplaces that process payments between buyers and sellers, regardless of size or industry.
For you as a seller, this has a direct benefit: the verification ensures that payouts from your domain sales go only to you and no one else. It also protects your account from anyone acting in your name.

How does the process work?

For the verification, we work with Adyen, one of the world's leading payment service providers, which also serves platforms like eBay and Uber.

The process is fully online and takes just a few steps:

  • You'll receive a personal email from us as soon as your account is ready for verification.
  • Log in to your Sedo account and follow the prompt under “My Sedo.”
  • You'll be directed to Adyen, where you enter your details and upload a document if needed.

In most cases, verification is completed within minutes, sometimes it can take up to two working days. You can pause the process at any time and continue later. We'll keep you updated by email at every step.

What is checked?

The information required depends on whether you're active on Sedo as a private individual or as a business.
Private individuals provide their name, address, and date of birth. In some cases, an identity document may also be required.
Businesses provide company details and their registration number. The identity of the beneficial owners is also confirmed.

What if I don't have a Sedo account yet?

No problem. Verification is only required for active sellers. If you'd like to sell domains through Sedo, verification is part of the onboarding process and straightforward to complete.

What happens if I'm not verified?

Payouts from domain sales can only be processed after successful verification. Ongoing domain transfers will be paused until your verification is complete. We'll give you plenty of time and send several reminders, no need to worry if you miss an email.

What you can do right now

The more complete and up to date your account details are, the smoother your verification will be. It's worth checking your information now, especially your name, address, and bank details. You'll find your account details under "My Sedo" after logging in.

When is it my turn?

Verification is being rolled out gradually to all active sellers. You'll receive a personal email as soon as your account is ready. Until then, everything continues as normal.

How to tell that an email is really from Sedo

Your security matters to us — so here's a quick note: our seller verification emails never contain a link asking you to log in directly. We always ask you to open Sedo in your browser and log in to your account from there. If you receive an email that includes a direct login link and claims to be from Sedo, please treat it with caution and contact us at contact@sedo.com if in doubt.
